Matthew W. Szabo Biography

Matthew W. Szabo was appointed as the City Administrative Officer (CAO) effective July 4, 2021. Szabo has been working to improve City services for residents of Los Angeles for over 25 years, serving as a senior advisor to three Mayors, the City Attorney, and a City Councilmember. Szabo most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Mayor Eric Garcetti, overseeing budget, policy and communications, prior to being appointed as the City’s CAO.

Szabo attended local public schools, and earned a degree in government and international relations at Notre Dame before attending graduate school at the University of Southern California’s School of Policy, Planning and Development.
